Commissions
Commissioning new musical works by Canadian composers for the orchestra to perform in concert is one of Esprit's key activities. To date, founding Music Director, Alex Pauk, has commissioned over 70 pieces of music by more than 50 outstanding Canadian composers.

Highlights of Esprit commissions include:
- Harry Freedman's Town (1991) was commissioned with the support of the Ontario Arts Council and was recorded on Esprit's Iridescence (1993) CD
- Chris Paul Harman's Axle was commissioned with the support of the Ontario Arts Council and premiered in March, 1999
- John Rea's Vanishing Points, commissioned by Esprit, premiered in August, 1983.
- R. Murray Schafer's The Palace of the Cinnabar Phoenix was commissioned with the fundraising support of Esprit Orchestra and with financial support by the Canada Council, the Ontario Arts Council, the CBC and the Laidlaw Foundation; premiered in August, 2000; his Viola Concerto was commissioned jointly with CBC Radio and was supported financially by CBC Radio and Canada Council; premiered in March 1998; R. Murray Schafer's The Falcon's Trumpet was commissioned with the support of the Canada Council and premiered March, 1996, while Scorpius (1990) was commissioned with assistance by Canada Council and was recorded on Esprit's Iridescence CD in 1993
- Harry Somers' The Third Piano was commissioned with the support of the Canada Council and the Ontario Arts Council and premiered in March 1996
Esprit Orchestra acknowledges the support of the Canada Council for the Arts
which last year invested $26.6 million in music throughout Canada.
