Education Sponsorship

"The conductor really explained things well and the band was fabulous!"
- Maxine Fabea of N.A. Boylen Collegiate Institute on the school concert In The Air

Throughout Esprit's history, the orchestra has presented concerts and education programs for students and educators. As part of its regular season activities, Esprit presents Toward a Living Art, a series of educational events with special school concerts and lectures. In most cases, the young people who participate are experiencing new music for the first time.

Students experience Toward a Living Art events at no cost thanks to sponsors like The SOCAN Foundation and the Harold E. Ballard Foundation.

                  Toward a Living Art. . .

  • gives youth the rare opportunity to meet and interact with leading Canadian composers, performers and artists.
  • guides young people through the terrain of new music in a comprehensive, enjoyable way.
  • Places strong emphasis on Canada's orchestral musical identity.

The program encourages young people to develop a delving interest in new music, and helps to cultivate future audiences and inspire tomorrow's artists.

                  Education Sponsorship Opportunities

                  Student Audience Sponsorship

  • This program provides students in the Greater Toronto Area with sponsored (free) concert tickets to attend regularly programmed Esprit concerts. Corporate and other private sources provide funding for this project. For example, each year students of Don Mills Collegiate attend performances throughout our season thanks to this sponsorship.

                  'Living With Music' Development

  • Living With Music teaches children how to be responsible concert-goers and attentive listeners, and how to respond to, form and express opinions about new music. This program sponsors an Esprit musician or composer to speak to students in a classroom setting.

                  School Concerts and Run-outs

  • School concerts and 'run-outs' performed in school auditoriums give young people access to music and artistic personalities which they otherwise would not encounter. These concerts are based on repertoire from Esprit's annual concert series and directly reinforce the Toward a Living Art workshops and lectures given by Esprit artists. Sponsorship of school concerts & run-outs covers travel costs and musicians' performance fees.

Visits to Radio, Film & TV Recording Studios

  • Sponsor a visit by students to locations where music production occurs. This fascinates young people, giving them new insights into how classical music is recorded in the digital age. CBC Radio & TV, Bravo! NewStyleArts Channel, and CHUM/City TV, have all been exemplary in supporting this feature of Esprit's education program.

Esprit on the Internet - Web Site Development

  • More and more, children and students use the Internet to enhance their education. Orchestras, such as the New York Philharmonic orchestra, have demonstrated how well the Internet can be used in the education of young people. Sponsor the development of Esprit's Educational Section on our Web site and students everywhere will be able to use a valuable new educational tool in developing knowledge about Canadian music.

                  'Coffee Chats' and Pre-Concert Talks

  • Before each concert, Esprit asks those composers whose works are being performed to speak to our audience (all ages) about their music. This sponsored event gives the public the chance to 'get to know' the composer and better understand his/her music. It also breaks down barriers between artists and the public. Coffee chats, similar in nature, are held in private homes or a public place during the week prior to a concert.
