Sponsor The Weekend New Wave Composers Festival
In 2001/02, Esprit produced Canada's first-ever Weekend New Wave Composers Festival. This well-attended two-day event served as a platform and 'hang-out' for 14 rising-star Canadian composers (30-to-40-something) who travelled from across North America to attend. Adding an international flavour, filmmakers and composers from Holland attended as Esprit conducted by Alex Pauk performaned of the soundtracks of their films during screenings. Esprit performed the orchestral works of five composers and two electroacoustic pieces were played. Seven emerging composers joined these composers to be on hand, meet the public, participate in discussions, and plan for participation in future Esprit events.
SOCAN and Scotiabank Group provided funding for the composers' travel & accommodation and contributed to covering special equipment expenses & production costs associated with multi-media events and panel discussions. Procter & Gamble Inc. funded a reception dinner for VIP guests & composers and other special events.
Well known senior Canadian composers John Rea, Michael Colgrass, Alexina Louie and José Evangelista, as well as Dutch Cultural Attaché Bram Buijze, filmmaker Larry Weinstein and actor Arsinée Khanjian participated in Out-of-the-Box, a free to the public forum on creativity and 'new music'. Internationally renowned violist Rivka Golani performed as Esprit's guest soloist.
Many of these rising star composers had never met one another, making The Weekend a point of contact that created an important sense of cohesion for this "happening" new generation of composers.
